Youth Demand Central Communication Hub

Youth Demand Central Communication Hub: Community Responds Northeast Coalition evolves existing Hotline

Every day, at least 8 million children are left alone and unsupervised once the school bell rings. While 9 out of 10 Americans think that all youth should have access to after-school programs, two-thirds say it is difficult to find programs...even locally (according to the National Youth Violence Office).
This is true for Northeast Portland youth, who voiced a need and a concern at a recent Youth Engagement Workshop sponsored by the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods and League of Women Voters of Portland. During the discussion following a panel of community leaders, youth asked how to find out about all of the issues and opportunities to get involved. It was clear that youth want to be engaged and need the channels to do so. Youth participant, Deyalo Bennette, shares that "This is another step for our community to take the lead in responding to our own needs. It is a symbol of positive change. I am inspired to be the lead youth organizer for the Hotline."
"I didn't have this growing up and didn't know there could be more to my life than basketball until I graduated college. The Hotline is helpful for youth to know resources to develop personal skills and interests. Today's youth are primed to learn and explore. If they don't have an outlet for this creativity or interest, then they turn to the streets," explains Imani Muhammad, Hotline Project Coordinator, "For the average youth who are not enrolled in programs that provide afterschool programming, the number one question is where do I go and how do I find out about opportunities for youth. Youth today are ready to lead and want to be prepared," she continues.
In response to the local youth outcry and the lack of access to information, the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods stepped up in January 2009 to provide a central communication hub in partnership with youth, schools, agencies and organizations. The NE Coalition evolved its Youth Gangs Hotline into a Community Youth Hotline to serve more youth and offer greater access to free and affordable programs.
With a generous grant from Spirit Mountain Community Fund, the Community Youth Hotline is rapidly evolving under the leadership of Imani Muhammad, the founder of the Youth Summit and the Peace and Unity Festival. A team of eight youth guide the development and direction of the Hotline along with a growing number of adults- all serving on the Youth Advisory Council.
The vision for the Hotline is to be a current and dynamic information referral resource for youth of all ages to call and find out how to get connected to free and affordable programs, projects, jobs and volunteer opportunities within their neighborhood. Youth will be connected to services including basic needs, alcohol and drug treatment, family support, and gang prevention as well as projects, afterschool programs, jobs, volunteers opportunities, arts and culture events and classes. Youth with ideas are encouraged to call to join the think-tank of creating a thriving community. With 24 hour messaging service, calls will be answered and returned by staff and volunteers Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 6:30pm.

Individuals, associations, agencies and organizations are encouraged to register their opportunities for youth in the Community Youth Hotline Directory at www.necoalition.org/hotline or call 503-823-4264.
Youth and adults interested in participating in the development of this project can drop in to the Youth Advisory Council meetings on the First and Third Fridays at 3:30pm at the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, 4815 NE 7th Avenue, Portland.
Donations to the Hotline to support its development may be sent to "Community Youth Hotline", NE Coalition of Neighborhoods, 4815 NE 7th Avenue, Portland, OR 97211 or visit www.necoalition.org.
The Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, an independent non-profit, is a district coalition dedicated to the building a vibrant community for ALL in the inner North and Northeast Portland area. www.necoalition.org

THIS SUNDAY August 30th... We Could Use Some Help Fellas

Here is some info about the BMW (Black Men Working) BBQ. We would  love to see you there!

P.S. – Rob & David (OG One) What is needed to be done in prep for the event? I want to serve before I get served. Anyone down to help with me. I’m on board to help.

Here are some areas I know we’ll need help in.

·         Food Prep

·         Setup – Asa Pritchard, ?????

·         Clean Up (Make this Priority) please don’t just come and leave without helping or asking what can be done. It starts at home first.

So Remember SAVE THE DATE...

Even though it is right around the corner!

First, thanks again for all of the feedback, support and commitment!!!  It is greatly appreciated!  Second, some of the resounding things we heard from our meeting were that

  1. We need to get to know each other, and need an opportunity to socialize before we get to work
  2. We need to move swiftly and capture the momentum

With those two things in mind, we have planned an old fashioned cookout!!!

What:  Cookout/ Gathering for Black Men, Boys and their families

When:  this Sunday August 30th at 2:00 pm (program tentatively schedule for 4:00 pm)

Where:  Unthank Park/ SEI Center North Kerby and Failing (we will be in the park AND the building)

Why:  because Brothers like to eat!!!  Because we need to grow our capacity and want to include some who missed out on the first meeting.  Because we want to include the families of the men so that they can see what it looks like to have a large group of Black men together. And we want to get to know each other as we embark on this journey...

I realize this is short notice, however we did not want to bump against Labor Day, and wanted to get together before schools starts back.  We are asking that each person and family contribute to the menu, so tomorrow we will distribute a list of needs and are asking people to RSVP for the gathering, and sign up to bring something.

Brethren, y'all know how we do!!!  Grab a slab, pick up a bucket of chicken, hit up Winco or Costco for a pack of hot dogs, sausages, chips, fruit, drinks, etc.

This is open to the families and we are seriously encouraging each Brother to invite another Black man who missed out last time.  Bring your fathers, grandfathers, sons, nephews, grandsons, brothers, uncles, friends, co-workers, colleagues, students, EVERYONE (obviously, the amount of people you bring should reflect the amount of food, etc you bring, so folks don't go hungry)!!!  Wives, daughters, girlfriends, mothers, spouses are cordially invited also (since some of y'all can't cook and we don't want everyone bringing fast food!)

CHECK THE FaceBook CAUSE PAGE (BMW), AND CHECK BACK TOMORROW FOR MORE INFORMATION...

This Saturday Peace and Unity Fest

GREETINGS FAMILY,

Yes we are just days away from the 2nd Annual Peace and Unity Fest the Fundraiser for the 4th Annual Youth Summit.  Many of you have offered your help leading up to this event and I want to say I am extremely grateful for your assistance.  I am calling on you again!  If each one of you brings a $5 donation with school supplies that will help us get started before any guest and visitors come to the event.  I would like this Peace and Unity Fest to set the standard for the up coming years.  So encourage your family and friends to support and give to our youth who will be starting school in a few weeks and may not have supplies that they need to be successful.

I also encourage you to bring a few dollars to support the local vendors.  Many of them are small business owners and need the support from you.

Thank you again and I look forward to seeing you this Saturday

Confirmed Performers, Aztec Dancers, African Dance, Toni Hill, Silver Shadow D, Luck-One, DLUXTHELIGHT, Ro Deezy, Blacque Butterfly, DeAngelo, Johnny Cool, and more with live DJ's throughout the event.

"Baby Micheal" Painted by Mo Fee

While painting this someone commented to me, "Looks like she messed it up." I had to regulate on that jive turkey with quickness and the wrath gawd! I just said "mo knows, bro, she knows what she is doing." No violence came to him. He was twice my size and weight. Enjoy the process, and the music was produced by DLUX THE LIGHT (Me).

5SOUL3 Artist Manifesto

In developing the urban soul of Portland, OR and surrounding areas, we must unite our collective energy, talents, and support one another in order to grow. With this intention, here is a list of ideas to firmly and boldly establish our presence, our talents, and our community in Portland as a prime destination for soulful artistic expression.

-Support and promote a community calendar By support we must be consistent in posting our shows and events to the calendar. Then we must post calendar widgets and links on every social network we actively participate in. The calendar is provided google under the name of "The 5SOUL3 Movement." To post your dates you need to create a google calendar account. Then send an email to dluxthelight@gmail.com stating you would like to post your dates to the calendar. I will reply with instructions of what you need to provide. "The 5SOUL3 Movement" Calendar will provide a central location for potential fans to find urban soul music in Portland, OR.

-Support and promote a community blog The 5SOUL3 blog is a community blog for artist to post anything relating to their journey as a performer. To provide proper support to the blog, we should provide one blog post a month. To promote, again, post widgets and links on every social network we are actively involved with. With a central blog, it shows the true size and force of our movement. It shows our continuous progression and advancement in our careers. Our stories will bring more people and more attention to we do on a deeper level. This will establish our scene.

-Find and link to each other on social networks Most of us already do this, and we just need to expand it to all networks we are a part of. Youtube, myspace, facebook, ning, soundclick, twitter etc… This will keep us more up to date with each of us our doing. We will be able to more effectively promote each other's events and happenings, which increases the word-of-mouth marketing.

This is a living document, meaning more points will be added as we grow. This is an open document, meaning that your constructive input is needed and desired. Use the comments to add your points, thoughts, and concerns.

We are moving. We are growing. We are making presence heard, felt, and smelt. We are the soul of Portland. We are 5SOUL3.

Mos Def Show Rescheduled

This was written on the 22nd of may, after discovering the show was rescheduled. Sorry for the delay.

Due to traveling difficulties my Mos Def evening has BEEN postponed. I say boo to this.
Anyway, I'm sitting here wondering what takes to make your city recognize you. Lilla D'mone is doing a free show tonight in absence of mos Def. There are maybe ten people here right now. If they are like me they are here for the hell of it. No dis to Lilla but we didn't come to see her. What does it take for your city to recognize? Assuming talent is equal, does take the world telling us what we got? GO to NYC or LA and have them validate, place their stamp on your ticket to fame on your own stage? Hope not.
I don't like to blame people, the fans. They don't know any better until they know. As Mos would of said tonight, the hard headed got to feel it to believe it. I think up to artist to think bigger and build. Also artist have to do the work to connect their music to the market, without selling out and seeming fake. What about you as an artist connects most with people then market the hell out of it.
